Sailing in Greece: what should you pack and what can you expect?

Sailing in Greece is of course very different from sailing in the Netherlands or on inland waters. And because it is so different, we have some practical tips for you here. We will discuss the sailing certificate and sailing experience, the day of arrival per location and things you can bring with you, taking into account the inventory of our yachts and the weather! What should you bring with you?

Please do not bring any suitcases. Bags are preferred because you can store them more easily. In addition to your swimwear and summer clothes, we recommend that you always bring at least one long pair of trousers and a sweater for all seasons. In the months of July and August, you will hardly need it. It can rain a bit in all seasons, so it is handy to pack a sailing jacket The following applies for all seasons: bring sunscreen with a high factor and good sunglasses. Shoes with a non-slip, light colored sole (preferably boat shoes) are always the most comfortable and safe on board.

Well on the way

Once you have booked, about 2 weeks before departure to Greece you will receive an email with practical information. Please note that you must pay for the extra options in cash upon arrival. Of course, you can withdraw money at cash machines in Greece, however it is always good to bring some cash with you.

Set sail!

Often you will not sail on the first day, but the second. It is our experience that most people go to sleep as soon as they can get on the boat because they either had an early flight and skipped a night or they have a flight with a late in the evening arrival. If you arrive early, have completed the check-in and have received the boat papers and if you are sailing bare boat then you can usually set sail the same day. Please keep in mind that especially on busy weekends we have a 5pm check-in time to avoid disappointment. There is simply a lot of work to be done on busy change over days, especially with boats. But of course, we will call you if you can get on the boat earlier.

Your departure point is different when you have a rental boat from the Lefkas or Nidri marinas. Your departure will then be from the marina where the boat is rented. You can choose to sail to Sivota in the afternoon to join the rest of the flotilla, we will gladly reserve a place for you at the jetty. If you don’t want to leave until Sunday, then we will of course brief you in advance and meet up with you again at the first day’s destination.

When you are sailing in a flotilla: due to the various arrival times of flights, the first briefing will take place at 9:30 on the second day. Often only then is the entire flotilla complete. The last sailing day is the next to the last day of the period (Friday) because several flights often leave early on the last day (Saturday). If, however you have a late flight you can for example explore the island. In any case, all must disembark by 9am on Saturday morning. Unfortunately, it is then almost time to go back home.

Sailing with children

Sailing is great fun for children! They can actively ‘participate’ on board, but also enjoy swimming, snorkelling, or relaxing on deck. When you sail in a flotilla, the children always meet up with each other. Kids entertainment is not a standard part of the flotilla, we can of course see if something can be organized. For example, a dinghy race, hanging from the boom, etc., but once the children are together and already enjoying swimming and / or playing, we do not want to impose anything on them, It’s still a holiday, right?!
